Community Workshop & Jam
Väsen-Duo
Florida State University’s Musicology and Community Music programs invite you to a FREE community workshop with internationally renowned Swedish folk musicians, Väsen-Duo. As part of their campus residency leading up to the FSU College of Music’s annual Rainbow Concert of World Music, they will lead a hands-on session focused on traditional Scandinavian tunes.
The workshop will take place on Wednesday, February 25th from 6:00–7:00 PM inside the Dorothy B. Oven Park House (3205 Thomasville Road). It is open to community musicians interested in folk traditions and comfortable learning tunes by ear. Workshop space is limited, so advanced registration is required.

Following the workshop, we invite everyone to stay for a potluck and informal jam session from 7:00–8:30 PM. Please bring a dish to share if you’re able. Participants are welcome to continue jamming and/or enjoy the park and gardens; you are welcome to bring a lawn chair if you’d like to sit outside, as indoor chairs cannot be moved outdoors and indoor space is limited.
Parking is available at Dorothy B. Oven Park, with overflow parking available at Thomasville Road Baptist Church. We hope you’ll join us for an evening of music-making, food, and community!
Please note that alcohol is not permitted at this event.
About Väsen-Duo:
Väsen, Mikael Marin and Olov Johansson have, after more than 40 years of interaction and touring, refined their sound and their stage presence to the extent that today they are unique in their kind. With their playful and perfect interplay, they seem to defy the laws of physics in what appears to be a telepathic communication.
The music is intense and full of humour. They create their very own musical language which in its appeal is as modern as it is ancient. With the foundation firmly rooted in the traditional music of Uppland, they have always looked curiously at new musical
Väsen’s new album “Vågor” invites you to enter a colourful, expressive world. Many of the songs on this album are connected to water. There are some islands, a small bay, a water mill, and someone going against the current. The waves are always present. This theme has sparked our imagination!
We have also developed and deepened our rhythmic interplay between the nyckelharpa and the bass viola. Tracks like Kungshatt, Motströms, and Årsta holmar clearly show the step towards something new.
