Javacya Arts Conservatory and FAMU DRS Present: The King of the Jungle and Kinte in “Searching for the Sounds of Our Ancestors” A powerful musical and dance-theater experience honoring the journey, rhythms, and legacy of African and African American history TALLAHASSEE, FL — Javacya Arts Conservatory, in collaboration with FAMU DRS, proudly presents its original production, The King of the Jungle and Kinte in “Searching for the Sounds of Our Ancestors”, on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at 6:15 p.m. at the FAMU DRS Auditorium, 400 W. Orange Avenue, Tallahassee, FL 32305. Admission is free and open to the public. Blending live music, African and Caribbean drumming, string ensembles, professional dance, and powerful storytelling through movement, this original stage work explores a poetic journey of self-discovery through the ancestral sounds of the diaspora. The performance features both professional and student musicians, dancers, and actors ranging in age from 8 to 35, including members of Javacya’s esteemed Artists-in-Residence and the FAMU DRS arts program. The production is guided by Patrice Floyd, founder of Javacya Arts Conservatory. Guest choreographers include Aurora Hansian, Dance Coordinator at Tallahassee State College and Director of the Asian Dance Coalition, and Dr. Sara Brown, professor of World Music Studies and Humanities at Tallahassee State College. Featured ensembles include the FAMU DRS Summer Orchestra, the Javacya Elite Chamber Orchestra, and special guest performers from AYOKA African Drum and Dance. The musical score draws inspiration from iconic works such as Roots, Black Panther, Amistad, The Lion King, and Mufasa, culminating in a moving spoken-word sequence known as the “Prophetic Circle,” which honors the vision and legacy of influential Black leaders, artists, and trailblazers. “This performance is not just entertainment,” says Floyd. “It’s a call to remember, to reconnect, and to honor the stories carried in our sound.” From the rhythms of West Africa to the compositions of Joseph Bologne and Florence Price, Searching for the Sounds of Our Ancestors is a cultural celebration that invites audiences of all ages to reflect, rejoice, and be inspired.
